For the past few years all schools have been allocated money to be used to promote and improve the level of physical education within schools. The restrictions placed on us throughout COVID has caused us to revisit lots of concepts linked to the PESPPA strategy. These issues have included a lack of pool availability along with swimming lessons, lockdowns and prolonged periods of isolation and absences. At the moment this funding is going to continue to be in place until 2022-2023. The key areas which we will be focusing on this school year are shown in our action plan:
Sports Premium budget plan 2023-2024

Historically we have run a variety of after school clubs including board games, tag rugby, netball, football and gymnastics. A range of after school clubs for KS1 and KS2 will begin in the autumn term, these include dance/ music, games and a gardening club which is linked to our Forest Schools work. If anyone would like any more information about sports clubs please come and see Miss Mawson.
Heart Well Project
KS2 took part in the Heart Well Project during Autumn 2021 and enjoyed taking home their bags of equipment and completing different activities with their families. Children also enjoyed sharing their ideas with staff from the Heart Well Project and we had some of their activities feature in the second book. This was lovely to see.
Swimming
Swimming is an important skill and can encourage a healthy and active lifestyle. All Local Authority schools must provide swimming instruction either in Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2.
The programme of study for PE sets out the expectation that pupils should be taught to:
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]. Breathing is also an important part of this skill.
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Coronavirus Impact and Swimming:
Our school is aware of the significant drop in the number of pupils meeting swimming expectations by the end of KS2 in 2019-2020 compared to previous cohorts. We reviewed our swimming provision at the beginning of Autumn 2021 and we are continuing to offer the children in our Year4, 5 and 6 swimming on a weekly basis to help support them to be able to be “swimmers” . We are also planning appropriate ‘water safety’ and ‘drown prevention’ awareness within our PSHE and RSE & Health curriculum.
[Slideshow "sports-premium" not found]We are currently focusing on trying to improve the stamina and fitness of all children, as part of this the children in Class 1 have designed their own Active Blasts and are currently monitoring the impact of completing these twice a day. Each group of children leads one of their Active Blasts each week. Following one of these one of the children commented that it had helped her relax her brain so that she was able to continue with her work with a renewed focus.
Robinwood
Class 1 were lucky enough to go to Robinwood for a residential trip in October 2021. We all had an amazing time.
