We have chosen to work towards this charter due to studies carried out:
2021 Census states there are 120,000 Young Carers in UK. However, the Census makes no mention of families where drugs and alcohol are the cause for caring and therefore the true figure is expected to be a lot higher.
A more recent study by the BBC points to a “hidden army of carers”. Results indicated 1 in 12 school children have considerable caring responsibilities, around 700,000 across the UK.
We have a Young Carers’ club in school who meet every couple of weeks to play games, have circle time and discuss any issues.
The children included in this group have explored what it really means to be a young carer, with this understanding the children have created their own group name and logo which expresses the caring nature and personality of the children involved. During the year, the Caring Kids have taken part in sessions that include, yoga, mindfulness and meditation which has helped children to understand their personal emotions and has supplied them with techniques and strategies to help them to process their feelings in a healthy way.
The Bridge Young Carers Service did an assembly and workshops with our pupils in 2023.
Tow Law Millennium Primary School Young Carers Policy 2024
On Thursday 9th June 2017, Mrs McNally attended the Young Carers’ celebration event at Shildon Locomotion museum and was very privileged to receive the Young Carers’ Charter on behalf of Tow Law Millennium Primary School’s Young Carers’ group. Our work to support Young Carers has continued and we were reaccredited in 2018 and again in 2021.
