Polar Bears – Oases Workshop
Amy, from Oases, came into school at the end of January to work with our Green Leaders group for the second time. They learnt about non-renewable materials and the impact that power stations are having on our planet.
They then went outside and played a game pretending to be polar bears. Through the game, the children learnt about the polar bear’s home melting and what we can do to help stop this happening.
Dance Festival
The children from Class 3 took part in the Dance festival at Parkside Academy on Tuesday 6 February. They did a fantastic dance routine to ‘Uptown Funk’. They created the dance routine themselves; working individually, in pairs and also as groups.
Well done to you all!

The Secret Behind Christmas was a KS2 extravaganza. The children wowed and thrilled the audience for the entirety of the show. All the children loved the disney songs and there were some excellent singing performances including solos and a fabulous trio. The audience waited in anticipation to find out whether Mrs Claus and her feisty elves could solve the problem of the missing reindeers. During their quest they met a range of characters from Simba to Aladdin to Elsa and Olaf. Then finally Buzz and Woody succeeded in helping Mrs Claus retrieve the reindeers from the wicked Cruella Deville and her henchmen, with the help of the cunning Puss in Boots. Well done to all the children for their hard work.

Mini Police Assembly
Our Mini Police gave a fantastic assembly about anti-social behaviour to the rest of the school.
They informed the other children about aspects of anti-social behaviour through acting.

Thornley Tree Planting
A year ago, our Year 6 pupils planted trees at Thornley with Durham Wildlife Trust. We have had an update about these trees and wanted to share it with you:
Anne Porter, the Heart of Durham Project Officer at Durham Wildlife Trust would like to invite everyone to a community planting day:
‘We are having another community planting day on February 24th of February and your pupils and their families would be very welcome to come and help plant.’
More details about the community planting day will be posted on the Tow Law Facebook page.
Wind Turbines – Oases Workshop
Amy, from Oases, came into school on Friday 12th January to give a renewable energy workshop to our ‘Green Leaders’.
She brought some very special new equipment with her; small scale wind turbines. The children investigated, using fans, the impact of wind speed on the wind turbines and they could also see the amount of electricity that was being made through a scale, a high pitched beep and flashing lights. They were able to investigate how a solar panel works as well.
The Green Leaders can’t wait to get some of our projects up and running in school during spring term.

Well done to Ellis for winning the Tidy Ted litter poster competition. His poster encourages people to put their rubbish in the bin and keep Tow Law tidy.
Tidy Ted presented Ellis his winning poster in a special frame and gave him a voucher as well!

Dogs Trust Workshops
We had a special visitor from the ‘Dogs Trust’ in school to teach our children how to be safe around dogs. They learnt to remember the ‘X Factor’ when out and about where dogs are.
Alison, from the Dogs Trust, then carried out a workshop in each classroom ranging from ‘A Day at the Dogs Trust’ to a senses workshop for KS2.

Our Early Years and Key Stage One children performed in their nativity on Wednesday 13th December. What a fantastic performance it was!
The nativity was called ‘A king is born’ and was centred around a family on Christmas Eve. The children in the family wanted to read a story before bedtime on Christmas Eve and their Mum read them the nativity story. The children then acted out the nativity story and sang the songs beautifully throughout the performance.
