As part of our geography work in the Summer term Class 3 visited Waskerley Station where they met Dave, a former Countryside ranger.
The children visited St Matthew’s church and enjoyed hearing about the history of the church and village before walking along the Waskerley Way , previously a railway line between Consett and Darlington, to Burnhill Nature reserve. The children found out about how the railway was used as the main way to transport freight between the main towns of the area. They especially enjoyed finding out about the Dingy Skipper butterfly and of the work that Mr Bell, the rangers and the local schools have completed to ensure they have a habitat to live.
When they arrived at Burnhill, the children enjoyed their packed lunches, provided by the school kitchen, before pond dipping. They gained a new school record for finding 16 newts in the pond, however the current record is finding 21 newts in one visit. We shall have to visit again to see if we can break the record.
