Welcome to our School Council
At Tow Law Millennium Primary School, we have an outstanding School Council group who are a credit to our school. Our School Council group is usually made up of two children from year groups 1 to 6. However, due to current restrictions we have 1 pupil per year with the designated role this academic year. Each year group voted for their new School Councillor. This is done by a student vote and really means that the School Council are representing the ‘pupil voice’.
The School Council meet once every week during lunchtime. Older children within the group lead the meetings including taking minutes and distributing activities to other children. Miss Walker is the lead adult for our School Council group.
Our School Councillors are very proud of being a member of the group and made the following comments about being a School Councillor:
- ‘It’s really fun fundraising for things in school’.
- ‘It’s really nice coming together to read things from the suggestion box from the children in our classes. Sometimes we go up on the stage in assembly and we tell the children what we have been doing’.
- ‘We like to think about suggestions; if we should or shouldn’t do it’.
- ‘It is very fun being a School Councillor because we get to fundraise for lots of different charities. We discuss about what we can do for the school. We also prepare for the school fairs’.
2024 – 2025 projects
Our School Councillors are organising a pyjama day to fundraise for the Rainbow Trust. Come back to see some photographs!
2023 – 2024 projects
Our School Councillors are currently working with the Sports’ Leaders to organise playtime activities. They have voted to organise fundraising for the Rainbow Trust which helps ill children and their families. They are looking forward to meeting with Chartwells to discuss the current lunch options.
In March 2024, our pupil groups were awarded the Investing in Children award again. We are all excited to receive our written report!
2021 – 2022 projects
In spring 2022, our School Councillors were very excited to start face-to-face meetings again. They have supported our school office with organising and drawing raffles for fundraising.
‘I was very impressed by the range of evidence the children gave me about dialogue that has resulted in change at Tow Law Millennium Primary School. The children were very proud of the contributions they have made to their school, which are celebrated through events and display boards. The children described their school as a very nurturing and supportive environment, where everyone has the opportunity to put forward their ideas and where children and staff all treat each other with kindness.
The children felt that their voices were heard in school and when I asked if their school should receive the Investing in Children Membership Award™ for dialogue resulting in change they were all in agreement: “Yes!” “Definitely!”
Therefore, I have no hesitation in recommending that Tow Law Millennium Primary School once again has its Investing in Children Membership Award™ renewed.’
2020 – 2021 projects
Due to the Covid-19 restrictions during 2020 – 2021, our School Councillors played a crucial role in being a visible ‘voice of the school’ within each class.
2019 – 2020 projects
Our School Council group have continued to work with Taylor Shaw this academic year. Alongside the Green Leaders, they have been questioning the amount of plastic waste from our school dinners. They have also planned key themed lunch days throughout the year.
They arranged and organised sponsored runs to fundraise for CLIC Sargent, a charity very close to our hearts at TLMPS. Unfortunately, due to school closure this has to be put on hold. But we can’t wait to rearrange and relaunch the sponsored challenge!
2018 – 2019 projects
Our School Council were a very focused group during 2018 – 2019. They focused on fundraising for St Teresa’s Hospice in Darlington at the start of the year. They organised a ‘Wild Hair Day’ and carried out a bake sale.
They continued the work of the previous School Council group by working alongside Taylor Shaw and the kitchen staff to identify changes that pupils would like in school dinners. They also organised a successful ‘Leavers’ lunch’ for our Year 6 pupils. They also chose to have an ‘ice-cream maker’ in school during the last week of summer term using our Taylor Shaw credits. All pupils really enjoyed this in school, a lovely end of year treat!
The pupils also wrote letters to the Town Council and Councillor Manchester to apply for funding for activities taking part in school. They were successful in all of these applications and have therefore supported the school in receiving an iPad for our Facebook page and funding towards coach costs for our summer term visits to Teesmouth Field Centre. They also applied for funding so that our KS1 and KS2 pupils could be trained in basic first aid. Many thanks to the Town Council and Councillor Manchester for your continued support of our school.
Following Christmas, the School Council group took part in a competition to collect Christmas cards to be recycled. Unfortunately, we were not the winning school but they enjoyed taking part and helping to recycle for the environment.
2017 – 2018 projects
Our School Councillors had a very successful year in 2017-2018. They created a ‘school prayer’ which is now said before the Lord’s Prayer during assemblies. The School Council consulted with the rest of the pupils and the staff several times to create a school prayer that everyone was happy with. The result is fantastic and they enjoyed being involved in decisions of how to display our school prayer.
The School Councillors also worked with Taylor Shaw and Durham County Council staff to discuss school dinners. This included planning special themed dinner days such as ‘Royal Day’.
Finally in summer term, they took on the extremely important job of raising funds for a performance stage on our KS2 yard in memory of Mrs Little, one of our lunchtime supervisors. They supported Miss Dobson in filling in application forms for funding grants from the AAP and also supporting in school coffee afternoons.
The School Councillors are an absolute pleasure to work with. They are dedicated, eager and passionate about improving our school. Well done School Councillors for all your hard work and good luck for your future projects!
